Cross-Continental Canoe Journey
8,000 kms+ one paddle at a time!
Now that Mike is warmed-up, from his 5,200 km canoe from Rocky Mountain House, Alberta to Montreal in 2011, he is ready to embark an 8,000 km+ canoe trip in 180 days. An epic adventure from Vancouver to the Cape Breton Islands! From Coast to Coast! Starting April 1st, 2014.
This is the first time in history that a solo Cross-Canada canoe trip has ever been recorded in such detail! Well... almost alone, he'll have his trusty companion and navigator, Spitzii, for the trip. Spitzii, Mike's Finnish Spitz, accompanied Mike on his last trip from Rocky Mountain House, AB, to Montreal, QC. A trip that took 130 days! Along with Spitzii, Atta (Mike's Wilson / Coconut Companion) will also be along for the trip to keep things 'alive'.
Mike's main goal is to get as many Canadians out as possible to join in on this ultimate Canadian experience. Mike hopes to see many supporters along the way, whether to paddle alongside him, or even just to share stories and experiences of the Great Canadian Wilderness.
This trip will involve crossing over three mountain ranges which include portages of over 100km, the vast and windy North Saskatchewan River that spans the Prairies, the rugged Canadian Shield that covers NW Ontario, the wild and unforgiving Lake Superior. From there, the beautiful Ottawa Valley and into the fast St. Lawrence River. Following the South shore of the St. Lawrence River will bring us into the Maritime provinces. After several portages and into the infamous tides of the Bay of Fundy before portaging to the Cape Breton islands and ending in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Mike plans to leave Vancouver around the first of April, and we will be tracking his progress using a spot locator and his videos. Mike's main goal is to get as many Canadians out as possible to join in on this ultimate Canadian experience. Mike hopes to see many supporters along the way, whether to paddle alongside him, or even just to share stories and experiences of the Great Canadian Wilderness. We encourage any former Atikokan residents that may be along his route to consider planning an event for when he passes through your town, or just going to the water to cheer him along his way. Please pass the information about this paddle to your friends and contacts, and please follow Mike throughout the summer to support him in completing his quest safely, and seeing how much he can fundraise for the teens of Atikokan.
The Facebook page where you can leave messages for Mike is linked below, as is the icon and address for any donations. Atikokan Youth Initiatives is a charitable organization, and as such charitable receipts will be issued for all donations received during this trip. The mailing address and icon both will ensure that your donation is received and logged. For a list of sponsors to date, follow the sponsors link. This is an opportunity to profile the spirit of Atikokan, and to support the teens, as we were all teens at one time.
We will keep updates coming as often as possible to cover the trip and leading up to Mike's departure on April 1st (2014)!
